NY Fashion Week: Shoppers Get A Taste

NEW YORK (AP) -- The fashion industry wants to invite you to New York Fashion Week -- sort of.

An enormous tent is up in Midtown for the kickoff on Thursday, fashion flags line the streets and designer Cynthia Rowley is going to share your ride in the back of a taxi via video.

Celebrities, designers and industry glitterati will mingle with shoppers at stores all over New York for the first-ever Fashion's Night Out (Vogue's Anna Wintour will be at a Queens Macy's!) Baby Phat will broadcast its runway show live in Times Square.

The fashion industry wants you to embrace fashion week, so that you'll get excited about the styles on the runways and, at last, go shopping.

Just don't try to get into the actual runway shows: They are still invitation-only.

And that's the dilemma for the fashion industry. Fashion is everywhere nowadays, yet shoppers are barely a part of the main event.

That, coupled with the economic meltdown and consumer confusion about seeing runway styles that won't be in stores for up to six months has led to some soul-searching by industry insiders.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America recently held a round-table to discuss whether the big, pricey fashion shows were still relevant. The runway schedule -- previewing fall clothes in spring, and spring clothes in fall -- has always made perfect sense for designers who needed time to produce their full line; retailers who needed time to plan their buys and editors who put magazines to bed many months in advance.

Story continues below

But now that runway shows can be seen online almost instantly, consumers are more interested -- and ready to buy clothes that aren't yet available.

"The consumer interest has evolved over time because the media has changed so drastically," said Fern Mallis, senior vice president of IMG Fashion, which organizes Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Bryant Park, hosting more than 60 designers including Isaac Mizrahi, Michael Kors and Narciso Rodriguez.

The shows' roots as a trade event are important, but designers know that there now need to be events for the public, too, said Steven Kolb, CFDA executive director.

It's a very different landscape than when the tents went up in 1993. As celebrities started coming, so did more cameras and now it seems everyone at the shows is putting reviews, photos and backstage soundbites online in real time.

"Everyone in this world now is a critic and reporter and commentator of sorts, and that's what's created a different consumer demand," Mallis said. "Everyone sees fashion all the time. It's something that's easy to talk about, dish about, make fun of or celebrate."

But, she added, "We still make it clear that our shows are by invitation only. ... I can't get upset about consumers being interested because at the end of the day, they have to put their hand in their pocket, pull out the credit card and buy the clothes."

The retail reality that is the backdrop to Fashion Week is harsh, with August retail sales declining for the 12th straight month. Some lower-priced retailers saw some signs of improvement, but the designers on the runways most often fall into the hard-hit luxury market.

Mallis said timing contributes to the disconnect between shoppers and the runway. Designers at the CFDA forum complained that retailers push them too hard on deliveries, ending up with fall merchandise on selling floors in July that are already discounted, devaluing their product and contributing to a wait-for-the-sale mentality.

That could be why so many retailers and designers are on board with Fashion's Night Out, the brainchild of Wintour in an effort to spur sales of in-season clothes, accessories and cosmetics.

"Fashion's Night Out is really about the public. There are incredible shows and events, appearances and activities geared for consumers so the consumer can feed off the excitement that is around Fashion Week," said Kolb.

He said he could envision the event becoming a permanent part of Fashion Week, and Mallis said that other public events are being considered for next year's move from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center.

Some stores don't want to wait that long. Ann Taylor, for example, is staging its own flashy catwalk to debut fall and holiday clothes that go along with a rebranding, and, farther away, in malls in at least a half-dozen other markets, Simon Property Group is partnering with its tenants for joint-store fashion shows.

"The main thing is accessibility," said Shari Simon, senior vice president of Simon's corporate marketing. "I can't go buy the things on the runway at Fashion Week in Bryant Park. This stuff you can have in an hour."

New Organic Clothing Site Debuts Online

Launching in December 2008, EcoFriendlySolutionsSite.com is a site that specializes in organic and fair trade clothing. Aside from having an ethical business practice and products, the site has a blog that describes the process on how to successfully go green.

Fairfield, OH (PRWEB) January 4, 2009 — Amidst the economic problems of the U.S., there’s still the worsening condition of the planet, which can have far more dire effects, particularly when these issues have gone unchecked. Entrepreneur Mary Jane Willke understands this, which is why she has gone with a greener solution to the problem through her new website, www.EcoFriendlySolutionsSite.com.

Willke’s site has a variety of organic apparel ranging from sleep wear to socks, everything on the site has been treated without chemicals and comes from fair trade manufacturers.

I was reading about how cotton is chemically treated and the conditions that some of these workers go through and it was something that I did not agree with

The items I have on my site are pesticide-free, and I pay attention to everything that comes through my business.

I wanted to have something that anybody could purchase from. These are products that should be invested in and are important to support, particularly when it comes to the health of children and individuals with sensitive skin

I’d like to link up with other sites and businesses and help each other out

This company is fully owned by a woman, it’s a new business and we specialize in something that will help the health of people and the planet

I think of this beyond just being a website; it’s an investment in clean living.

“I was reading about how cotton is chemically treated and the conditions that some of these workers go through and it was something that I did not agree with,” explained Willke. “The items I have on my site are pesticide-free, and I pay attention to everything that comes through my business.”

Having launched in December 2008, the site itself is relatively green, in a figurative sense, but it boasts an impressive catalog for men, women and children all around.

“I wanted to have something that anybody could purchase from. These are products that should be invested in and are important to support, particularly when it comes to the health of children and individuals with sensitive skin,” Willke said.

In addition to having a new site, Willke also has a corresponding blog in www.OrganicCottonClothingBlog.com. According to Willke, there will be posts about the process of how to “go green,” as well as reviews of organic and environmentally-friendly items.

As the site heads towards its first month as a full-realized business, Willke has plans to expand to include other items such as reusable shopping bags and to branch out with other environmentally sound organizations (”I’d like to link up with other sites and businesses and help each other out,” she said).

Yet at the end of the day, this independent business owner recognizes that she may have an uphill battle, but the result of her hard work is much more of a success than most will realize.

“This company is fully owned by a woman, it’s a new business and we specialize in something that will help the health of people and the planet,” Willke said. “I think of this beyond just being a website; it’s an investment in clean living.”

About the Company:
EcoFriendlySolutionsSite.com is a part of MJ Online Solutions Inc, which is owned and operated by Mary Jane Willke. The products on the site are organic, chemical-free products, as well as sweatshop-free.

Make up Advise for Models- Natural Skin Care

Getting healthier skin is not contingent upon high-cost prescription medications or obsessive skin care routines. Modifying your daily routine a tiny bit and upholding disciplined cleansing habits can help to add flawless skin to the list of your best qualities.

Eat healthier
By avoiding foods that often make your face breakout, your skin will be less oily and more resistant to blemishes. Some problem foods that may cause pimples or breakouts include chocolate and other candy, French fries, fast food, pizza and soft drinks.

To get your skin in better shape, you may not have to give up everything that has negative effects on your skin, but rather, eat those things in moderation. Have greasier foods as a special treat or on rare occasion when eating a healthy, balanced meal is out of the question.

Hydrate and exercise
Drinking the recommended eight glasses of water per day coupled with some regular exercise - walking, running, bicycling, engaging in sports - should have a great impact on one’s complexion. Increased blood flow due to aerobic exercise will positively impact one’s complexion with a glowing look to replace dull skin.

Not only will exercise and drinking water help skin tone and texture, but it will also make you feel more energized and great about yourself. By keeping your body in shape, you will feel less stressed and more capable of achieving those things you set out to do.

Monitor sun exposure
By using a moderate strength sunscreen, you will be protecting your skin from sun damage, skin cancer, aging and premature wrinkles. Too much sun can blister one’s lips, leaving them red, sore and charred. Sunburned skin will eventually peel most times, leaving skin areas blotchy and sensitive. The best approach to preventing sunburn and other sun-caused skin problems is to monitor how much time one spends in the sun and to avoid sun exposure by using sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater.

Practice a regular cleansing routine
Cleanse, exfoliate, tone and moisturize…this daily routine should carry you on your way toward healthier skin. Select a gentle skin cleansing solution that works for your specific type of skin - dry, oily, normal. Using your selected product, cleanse face in a circular motion and rinse with lukewarm water, as hot water zaps skin’s moisture.

Follow the cleansing stage with an exfoliant. A granular product is often especially effective in smoothing rough areas and releasing dead skin cells, allowing the face to be better moisturized.

After the exfoliation process concludes, use a toner or an astringent to tighten skin and remove any makeup or cleanser residue. A nice alternative to a toner or astringent would be doing a facial masque at least once a week, which tackles clogged pores while also firming skin and leaving it soft and silky.

Finally, pat skin dry with a soft towel but do not dry up all the water. Apply a moisturizer (with or without sunscreen) to help protect skin from dryness. Those who have oily skin do not have to moisturize as often as those who have dry, normal or combination skin.
When meeting someone new, most people take notice of the person’s face first, what is very important for models. For this and other reasons, maintaining clean, healthy skin is paramount to self-esteem, confidence, attitude, and, of course, your modeling career.

African designers eye growth at debut fashion week

JOHANNESBURG – Traditional prints vamped up with stiletto heels and shoulder pads define the inaugural pan-African fashion week where designers from 20 countries are eyeing growth despite the global slowdown.

The recession has dulled demand for haute couture from Paris to Tokyo, but African economies are faring better than many in the west and designers hope the energy of a young fashion industry and this week's new platform will help lure buyers.

Adama Kai from Sierra Leone described herself as a pioneer in her country, better known for a devastating civil war where drugged-up child soldiers hacked off villagers' limbs with machetes, than swathes of chiffon and the vintage mini-dress.

"I'm hoping to get exposure, to meet buyers, to link up with some magazines," said Kai, who was trained in New York and Paris.

"We're growing The excitement of childhood, the excitement of youth is what African fashion really has to offer the industry right now." Kai added.

Kai said the global slowdown had forced African designers, like their peers in the fashion capitals of Paris and Milan, to focus on practicality rather than whimsical design.

While South Africa already hosts several events for local designers, this is the first pan-African fashion week, and is aimed at highlighting the continent's creative energy by bringing 50 designers from across Africa under one roof.

"We needed a platform where we can have the focus of the world on what the design output of the continent is," said Precious Moloi-Motsepe, chief executive of Africa Fashion International, the company that hosts the event.

"We should in addition to admiring what comes from Western Europe begin to look inward and admire and celebrate ourselves."

Several designers said they liked to combine hints of African tradition and heritage with the best of European style.

South African designer Suzanne Heyns, who accessorized her Or d'Afrique collection with gold jewelry, explored Africa's French colonial past through European-inspired clothes that featured exaggerated hips and bottoms in a nod to the traditional curvier African female form.

"It is nothing that necessarily has to be traditional," Heyns said.

Eyola Adede, a Nigerian-born London-based designer, showed contemporary women's wear carried hints of African prints.

"I don't want to be pigeonholed," said Adede.

"Obviously Africa inspires me hugely because I'm from Africa, but at the same time the real influence for my brand is the Victorian era, which also took inspiration from Africa, South America and from all around the world."

Africa Fashion Week wraps up on Saturday with an awards ceremony where the winner will be given an opportunity to showcase at New York Fashion Week.

Fashionable Turnout for Barneys CO-OP at the Grove

At the Barneys CO-OP fashion show at The Grove shopping center in Los Angeles, a crowd of hip Angelenos turned out, dressed in sharp blazers, cool leather jackets, easy dresses and dandy woven shirts. The event’s guests—which included Barneys VIP clients, The Grove platinum-level shoppers and fashion insiders—looked like they walked off the mannequin pedestals of the Barney’s CO-OP. Their outfits were styled with the same attention to proportion and panache as the looks that came down on the runway.

The Barney’s New York CO-OP fashion show was the first of a forthcoming series of Fashion@The Grove events to occur at the outdoor shopping center.

The event highlighted Los Angeles–based designers sold at CO-OP, including Cynthia Vincent of Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent, Michelle Mason, John Whitledge, Jon Rose and Sara Mehrkhast of Trovata, Nony Tochterman of Petro Zillia, Jason Belick and Jamie Haller of Ever, and Ali Fatourechi of Genetic Denim, all of whom rubbed elbows with customers between the racks in the store after the runway show.

The local designers’ Spring pieces, pulled from the Barney’s CO-OP inventory, were mixed and matched together with the top names in contemporary fashion such as Marc by Marc Jacobs, Phillip Lim, A.P.C. and Helmut Lang.

Trovata’s preppy beach look was best seen in a grass-green plaid shirt and cotton skirt.

Genetic Denim’s cuffed slouchy shorts were worn with a simple gray tank and Vena Cava leather vest. Fatourechi and President of Sales Shaun Hurley eyed shoppers in their Genetic Denim jeans as they camped in front of their display at the store to help girls with their purchases. “That’s probably the most exciting thing, the first time seeing someone wearing the jeans,” Fatourechi said.

Tochterman, who has scaled her Petro Zillia collection back in recent years to focus on her West Third Street boutique, has only one dress for sale. The silk dress, which is available in three colors, features quirky printed spaghetti straps.

Mason’s black vest, blousy tank and black shorts ensemble showed a refined, tailored quality that was made laid-back in lightweight, drapey fabrics.

Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent, which is consistently the second or third best-selling designer at Barney’s CO-OP, according to the designer, closed the show with a long black dress with cuffed sleeves that summed up a relaxed, everyday glamour.

L.A. Fashion Week Dates Set

Mark your calendars.

The Spring 2010 run of Los Angeles Fashion Week is scheduled to take place Oct. 9–20, as decided in a meeting with the mayor’s fashion-coordinating council, including several fashion-event producers, designers, wholesale-showroom representatives and other members of the industry.

The meeting, held April 21 at the California Market Center, was called by Cynthia Ruiz, president of the Los Angeles Department of Public Works and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s “fashion ambassador.”

“When Mayor Villaraigosa came into office, he realized the importance of the fashion industry; it’s a $5.7 billion industry,” Ruiz said. “My hope today is that we could get everyone on the same page. The city of L.A. wants to support all credible shows in L.A.”

Among those in attendance were the organizers of last season’s largest events: Peter Gurnz of BOXeight, Jess Kane and Dani Michelle of CoLA Fashion Week, Leanna Lewis of Downtown L.A. Fashion Week, Mikey Koffman of L.A. Fashion Weekend, and Deborah Levine of the CMC. Representatives from Gen Art were invited but were unable to attend.

In addition, representatives from the California Fashion Association, the Los Angeles Fashion District Business Improvement District, the Cooper Design Space and public-relations company KPR, as well as designers Louis Verdad and Raymundo Baltazar, were in attendance.

Fashion Week events are scheduled to begin on Oct. 9 and run through Los Angeles Fashion Market, which is scheduled for Oct. 16–20.

The show producers agreed to meet later this month to try to divide up the dates to minimize overlap of events. —Alison A. Nieder
